History

A late-developing city of mixed housing

Founded in 1870 as a Presbyterian temperance colony and incorporated in 1957, Westminster stayed agricultural longer than neighbors. Depression-era hardship, the 1933 earthquake and the 1938 flood slowed building, so streets were often developed in smaller pieces by individual owners.

That produced varied housing: a block of ranch homes beside a custom house, each with its own chimney detail. A technician cannot assume the next house matches the last one, which makes identifying the flue type, material and condition the first task on every call.

Why us

A clear process for varied homes

Because Westminster homes differ block to block, each visit starts by identifying what the fireplace is and how it vents. Then comes the inspection, an explanation of what was found, and options for any repair. You are never given a one-size answer.

  • Fireplace identified first
  • Findings explained
  • Repair options offered

How a visit works

Three steps from phone call to finished work

  1. 01

    Tell us what you see

Call or use the form. Smoke smells, water stains, loose brick or a missing cap are all useful details.

  2. 02

    A technician looks it over

The chimney, flue and fireplace are checked, and what you find is explained in plain terms before anything is decided.

  3. 03

    Choose the work

Sweeping, a small repair or a bigger rebuild: you pick the next step with the findings in hand.

Weather

Low rainfall, but leaks still happen

Westminster sees close to fourteen inches of rain a year, almost all in winter. Annual highs average in the mid-seventies, with lows in the mid-fifties. A chimney with a cracked crown or missing cap can sit dry for months, then leak through the first hard storm.

Because use is often occasional, inspect before the first fire of the cool season. Look for blocked flues, dislodged cap, and soot buildup from previous burns.

Are Westminster chimneys older than they look?

Many homes were built after the Depression-era slowdown, so chimneys are often mid-century or later. Age alone does not fail a chimney, but decades of heat cycles and rain add up. Inspection finds what is actually wrong.

Do multi-generation households use fireplaces differently?

Usage varies. Many homes burn little or only for occasions, and decorative fireplaces still need a check. Unused flues collect debris, so test the damper and look up before lighting anything.

Does a chimney crack need immediate repair?

Not always, but cracks let water in and water enlarges them. Hairline cracks in a crown can be sealed. Wide cracks, loose bricks or leaning require a crown or chimney repair estimate.

What does a Level 1 inspection cover?

Level 1 is a visual look at the readily accessible parts of the chimney and flue, appropriate when nothing has changed in how you use it. Level 2 adds camera scanning and attic or crawlspace access, and is used after a change in fuel or a chimney fire.
